Press Release
International Leadership Charter High School
Newsweek America’s  Top High Schools
Beating the Odds 2014 : Top Schools for Low-Income Students

September 9, 2014

This year, Newsweek sought to recognize schools that beat the odds and who performed better than statistically expected for the students’ level of poverty.  For this list, schools were ranked on how well they prepare their students for college, taking students’ socio-economic background into account. A gold star next to a school’s name means that low-income students are scoring at or above average on state assessments. Newsweek has changed its approach for recognizing schools that narrow the achievement gap.  The International Leadership Charter High School Ranked among America’s Top High Schools 2014: Beating the Odds for Low Income Students.  http://www.newsweek.com/high-schools/beating-odds-2014

This recognition comes on the heels of The U.S. News & World Report ranking the International Leadership Charter High School on its “Best High Schools 2013 and 2014” list. These prestigious recognitions have demonstrated that ILCHS is among the top 25% of all public high schools in the United States. These honors are in addition to our school being ranked #6 of all NYC Public High Schools.  This national recognition in Newsweek America’s Top High Schools 2014, further demonstrates that our mission and vision for a world class education has become a reality and is making a difference in our school community and the lives of our young people.

Dr. Elaine Ruiz-Lopez in a statement released today, congratulates the faculty, staff, students, parents and Board of Trustees for this great accomplishment. “As the first community grown Charter High School in the Bronx, I am very proud that the International Leadership Charter High School is recognized by Newsweek for beating the odds for poor and low income students in 2014. The ILCHS numbers 137 out of 500 schools nationally who are closing the achievement gap for Latino and immigrant students.  A high quality education is the solution to transforming lives and lifting communities out of a cycle of poverty-one student at a time.”  Dr. Ruiz Lopez adds that this recognition comes on the heels of The U.S. News & World Report ranking the International Leadership Charter High School to its “Best High Schools 2013 and 2014” and being ranked #6 of all NYC Public High Schools.  “This national recognition further demonstrates that our mission and vision for a world class education is succeeding in making a difference in our school community and beyond.”

The ILCHS family is very proud of this accomplishment and is committed to continuing to provide a quality education to all of our students and aiming for and being recognized in Newsweek as #1 in America’s Top High Schools for 2015.  According to John Paul Gonzalez, Chair of the ILCHS Board of Trustees states “I am very proud of the great outcomes that our community grown charter high school is achieving and  I congratulate Dr. Elaine Ruiz-Lopez, founder and CEO of the International Leadership Charter High School on this honor. It is through her vision and courageous modeling that she has created this haven for youth in the Bronx where they are given the tools to reach their dreams. Bravo!”  For more information visit www.ilchs.org
