Emanuella Amankwaa, Mariama Bah and Nicole Perez participated in the Spirit of Community program this year representing the International Leadership Charter High School. The President’s Volunteer Service Award is presented by Prudential’s Spirit of Community Awards program on behalf of President Barack Obama. Sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), this prestigious award recognizes young people across America for outstanding community service activities. More than 370,000 young people across America have been considered for these awards since the program began in 1995.

"The recipients of the awards vividly demonstrate that young people across America are making remarkable contributions to the health and vitality of their communities," said John R. Strangfield, chairman and CEO of Prudential Financial. "In recognizing these students and placing a spotlight on their volunteer service activities, we hope to motivate others to consider how they can also contribute to their community."

"Demonstrating civic responsibility through community volunteerism is an important part of life," said NASSP Executive Director JoAnn Bartoletti. "These Honorees practice a lesson we hope all young people, as well as adults, will emulate."

ABC TV Anchor Sade Baderinwa

The Leadership, Staff and Students of the International Leadership Charter High School were delighted to be selected to participate in a Get Reel, a unique program created by Ms. Sade Baderinwa, News Anchor for WABC-TV. – Ms. Baderinwa has again partnered with Disney, the Lincoln Center Institute, and New York Women in Film & Television to implement the project.

Through this innovative program, professionals in the field of Television and Film share their expertise with high school students while encouraging them to “Get Reel” about the dedication and sacrifices they’ll need to make in order to pursue their dreams. Students get on the ‘inside track’ advice from pros who know - and exposure to a whole new world of possibilities! Get Reel has proven to be a true success!

The International Leadership Charter School was honored to be selected to take part in this program, and we are very excited about this opportunity for our students. To be accepted into the program, our students were required to submit an essay explaining who they are and why they would benefit from the program. As part of their participation , they were required to do a full day of community service - owning up to Ms. Baderinwa’s challenge - “You must give before you get!” All of our juniors and seniors are required to complete a total of 200 hours of community service as part of their graduation requirement.
