Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Our school community celebrates African American Heritage Month with lessons about legendary leaders who paved the way for freedom and equality for all persons of color in this country. Our scholars are actively studying lessons taught by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, Harriet Tubman, as well as viewing video clips of the Civil Rights Movement and the Voting Rights Act of 1964. Historical readings from novels such as Dr. King's "Why We Can't Wait" and Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird" provide a framework for the teaching of our history. The top movie pick of the season is Selma, a cinematic depiction of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and it is highly recommended for young people and families to see.
Results of Scholars’ College Application March
We have an update on the results of the senior college march to mail applications in January. We are delighted to report that 90% of our Scholars have received a record number of College Acceptances. The offers for admission have come from independent, public, and private institutions from throughout New York State and the eastern seaboard, including: Temple University, Hofstra University, Pace University, Manhattan College, St. John's University, SUNY Albany, SUNY New Paltz, Howard University, and the University of New Haven.
We Celebrate School Choice
During National School Choice Week our charter school welcomed very special dignitaries to our charter school. Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz, a long time public servant and legislator was greeted by members of Rachel Scott's Legacy Club. They presented the Assemblyman with a School of Choice scarf and led a tour of our classrooms. In addition, our scholars led a discussion and Q&A with our Assemblyman on topics that ranged from his record on education to his views on how to lower the drop-out rate in the neighboring high schools in the Bronx. We also welcomed a return visitor Councilman Andrew Cohen, who answered student questions about his reasons for pursuing public service and his background as an attorney. Our scholars in turn shared with Councilman Cohen their dreams and aspirations. Our community was thrilled to have such notable legislators visit our charter school. We look forward to their participation in our ribbon cutting for our new school facility in September 2015. Stay tuned!
100 Days of School Celebration Poster Contest
As we approach the start of the third quarter we also pause to reflect and celebrate our first One Hundred Days of School. Our students are actively working on 100 ways to celebrate the first one hundred days. We plan to unveil the winners of the 100 Days of School Poster Contest soon. In addition, we recognize National Random Acts of Kindness Week! What will your act of kindness be?
