Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Happy New Year! The month of January represents new hopes and dreams. Nationally, we also celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. and his role in the historical passing and signing of the Civil Rights legislation and the Voting Rights Act of 1964. As you know, these were very challenging times in our world and our local communities. However, a new year gives us all an opportunity to reflect on ways in which we can make a difference and contribute to social justice and peace in our neighborhoods, the work place, and our schools. We wish you all much peace, success, and prosperity in 2015 and beyond. At International Leadership CHS we have many exciting upcoming events and initiatives that are in development for this year. Please stay tuned! In the meantime, here are some end of year highlights and a celebration of accomplishments.

Scholars March to Post Office

2014-CEO-News-Senior College Application

Our 12th grade scholars at the International Leadership Charter High School marched in unison to their local post office to mail their college applications. One by one, our scholars dropped their envelopes off, saying it's something they've spent months preparing for. The postal workers and members of the community cheered them on. It's a particularly big moment for some who say they will be the first members of their families to go to college. Approximately 40 out of 59 scholars returned last week from their winter break and have proudly reported that they have already received college acceptances.

Noel Pointer Violin Club: Empowering Children One Note at a Time

2014-ILCHS-Violin-Club

In the Fall/Winter of 2014, a group of 15 scholars auditioned and were selected to join the Noel Pointer Violin Club that was established at International Leadership CHS. This club is part of a larger strategic plan to increase after school programs and clubs for our scholars in music and the arts. The Noel Pointer Foundation (NPF) was incorporated in 1995 under the direction of Ms. Chinita Pointer, wife of the late Grammy nominated jazz violinist Noel Pointer. The NPF keeps his legacy, spirit, and dream alive. Founded in 1995, the Noel Pointer Foundation (NPF) is a not-for-profit that dramatically enriches the lives of children by developing string music education programs for under-served communities in New York City.

Youth Philanthropy: The Spirit of Giving

2014-Rachel-Scott-Legacy-Club-Toy-Drive

During the month of December, “Rachel Scott Legacy Club” at ILCHS organized a toy drive in order to make a difference in a child’s life during the holiday season. This event was spearheaded by Ms. Gonzalez, Program Director of Parent and Community Engagement. Ms. Gonzalez is an active member of the group called “Los Nativos” from Salcedo, Dominican Republic (DR). Students donated toys  during the month of November and December as part of this effort. The toys collected were delivered directly to the Dominican Republic free of charge to “El Hogar de Formacion Integral Divino Nino Jesus in Palmarito Salcedo”.

On December 24, 2014, Ms. Gonzalez and members of “The Nativos” personally visited the orphanage where the toys were going to be distributed.  The orphans were very happy and appreciative of the toys they received for Christmas.  According to Ms. Gonzalez, their smiles and laughter were unforgettable and showed their appreciation with their hugs and calling her “Titi”.
