“I decided blacks should not have to experience the difficulties I had faced, so I decided to open a flying school and teach other black women to fly.” - Bessie Coleman

Celebrating Inspirational African American Women

In my search to highlight inspirational African American heroes, I found a “Sheroe” named Bessie Coleman who takes her place alongside of other extraordinary aviators and rarely highlighted during the celebrations of Black History Month. Bessie Coleman was the first black woman to earn a pilot's license. Because flying schools in the United States denied her entry, she taught herself French and moved to France, earning her license from France's well-known Caudron Brother's School of Aviation in just seven months. Coleman specialized in stunt flying and parachuting, earning a living barnstorming and performing aerial tricks. She remains a pioneer of women in the field of aviation.

Bronx HOPE: Women Mentoring in Medicine
Mentoring in Medicine (MiM) addresses healthcare disparities in urban communities by helping to increase the diversity of the healthcare workforce. MIM pairs healthcare professionals with students from third grade through health professional school in socioeconomically disadvantaged communities. Its mission is first, to ignite an interest in a health career for students; second, to help them execute a strategic plan for success; and finally, to support students currently enrolled in health professional school toward graduation and aid in early career development.

On June 29, 2016 we graduated 48 out of 53 scholars from the 2012 cohort. It is with great jubilation that we celebrate our recently published 94.3 % graduation rate (School Quality Report, November 2016). We are so proud and thrilled that three additional students persevered and achieved their goals and completed their graduation requirements and exceeded all expectations on the NYS Regents exam. These scholars will be invited guests at our 7th graduation ceremony.
